Kindred in Spirit

For all those connected to Wakefield Girls’ High School & Junior School and Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, I wrote these words for you. Ahead of the upcoming school merger, the board wanted a new school song. I know there’s been a lot of pain surrounding this merger, arguably more so for the Old Girls’ alumni, many of whom are mourning the loss of their school identity in so many ways — including the sale of many beloved buildings.

These words came to me almost instantly when the contest was announced. My vision was for something unifying and healing that connects all students, staff and alumni in the most fundamental way — in Spirit, in Essence. The words seek to build bridges, elevate our most noble qualities (the owl’s wisdom, and the lion’s courage) and hold promise for a bright future. All while being something 3-18 year olds can enjoy singing in a rousing, uplifting chorus!

Although the judges did not shortlist my lyrics, I wanted to share them freely with those they were meant for. They can’t replace fond memories or necessarily soften feelings of grief, but it’s a small offering to remind us all of why we shone.

We still shine.
